ACAS successfully concluded it’s 2 days residential workshop today for around 20 Arabic Calligraphy enthusiasts. Training programme was conducted by Ustaz J.M.Uvais, a certified Arabic Calligrapher.

Arabic Calligraphy Association of Sri Lanka – ACAS was established in 2017 by lovers of art with an aim of developing and promoting the Arabic Calligraphy to make it a household name in Sri Lanka. We envision a future where Sri Lanka will be proud of it’s Arabic Calligraphers who are internationally acclaimed. This is a very ambitious plan but with Allah’s permission nothing is impossible.

ACAS hosted two training workshops conducted by international Calligraphers; first in December 2018 and second in April 2019. Haji Noordeen from China was here for 10 days in 2018 and Ustaz Bandar and two academics from Saudi Arabia were here in 2019.

Our first step is to empower the artists who have been working with us since 2017 and enable at least some of them into able trainers. Second step would be to expand our calligraphy activities to a wider audience. These steps may require 3-5 years. Meantime, ACAS is planning to organize an exhibition in December 2024.

Our efforts have been strengthened by the presence and active engagement of Ustaz J.M.Uvaus, a certified calligrapher and a graduate of Al Azhar University. Ustaz Uvais has started a systematic training and mentoring of 20 calligraphy enthusiasts with a workshop on 18-19, November 2023 at Ratmalana Mosque and NEST Academy. He will continue to train this group philysically and virtually.
